Korkers Sausages, Rolvenden, Kent

Korker Sausages is a successful family business that started back in 1959 in a small butcher’s shop in the village of Rolvenden. Today, the factory produces sausages and sausage rolls for customers across the home counties and it proudly remains located in the village of Rolvenden.

The original brief was to increase freezer storage within the existing location by utilising dead, unused land. The need was crucial because the increase storage capacity would dramatically reduce overheads, with regards to hiring costly temporary storage units, which were an unsatisfactory and inefficient stop gap because there was simply not enough electricity to keep that amount of units running.

The project was complex and threw up a number of challenges. We dealt with all the necessary planning applications, building regs application, full structural and civil design along with a new drainage plan to bring the facility up to modern day standards. The build itself had to be managed within very tight parameters which involved following a staggered boundary fence. To further complicate matters, the new extension was being attached to an existing building with three different roof levels. Another major task was the relocation of the new drainage, fat traps and oil interceptor tanks.

The new space has transformed the business and has also lead to Korkers using it as their new production factory, as well as providing the increased freezer storage capacity.

Challenges

Some of the key challenges:

  • Relocating and installation of new drainage, fat traps and oil interceptor tanks
  • Very tight build parameters following a staggered boundary fence
  • Attaching to an existing building with three different roof levels
  • Factory maintained 100% production throughout process

Client Feedback

“We never had this space before, it was a an outside space and useless to us, but now it has increased storage and enabled us to stay in the village, so we can employ local people.”
